Getting Started with
Your Concrete Sidewalk
With the variety of concrete style options from stamped to decorative, VALROC Development Ltd. can transform a boring walkway into a work of art. Existing concrete sidewalks or walkways can be re-applied with more stylish products for an update as well. After an initial conversation, our consultation team will come to your location and assess your site. This way we can spend time getting to know you, your specific concrete sidewalk needs and provide insight on the job requirements. This will also give you an opportunity to ask any questions that you might have about the concrete work such as:
- What types of concrete sidewalk designs are there?
- How long does concrete sidewalk construction take?
- How do I figure out my concrete sidewalk specifications?
- What type of concrete walkway molds do you use?
- Will the concrete contractors have insurance?
- What type of concrete sidewalk forms do you use?
Resurfacing vs.
Reinstalling a Concrete Sidewalk
Sidewalks receive almost as much wear and tear as driveways do. Also, every winter they are scraped and salted. Therefore, the traffic and chemicals take a toll on the concrete’s appearance over time. Abrasions, spalling, stains and weather damage can be restored and upgraded. We resurface sidewalks with a cement-based overlay to correct minor discolouration and flaws. After the overlay, we can stamp, stain, stencil or engrave to leave your sidewalk or walkway looking better than ever before. If the concrete slab is badly damaged, resurfacing may not be a viable option. We provide a free on-site consultation before every project to help assess your situation and discuss the best plan of action.
Foundations Built Right
According to National Research Council Canada, the average life of concrete sidewalks is 20 to 40 years, but failure can occur as early as one to five years after construction. The ones that fall short are a result of poor planning and workmanship. Valroc Development LTD. is an award winning concrete contractor whose experience and level of expertise is unparalleled in the industry. Our practices adhere to Canada’s Best Practices for Concrete Sidewalks and exceed municipal standards.
By using the stiff subgrade, we ensure the foundation will not expand under weather conditions. Then, we apply a 100-150mm thick slab on grade. For long-term performance, we make sure all leveling and compaction is completed without frost present. Making sure the soil underneath has the right amount of moisture is imperative in the way the cement reacts in the future. Our machine operators specialize in uniform compaction that will save the surface from cracking later on.
The Perfect Mix for Concrete Sidewalks
Based on the individual needs of the project, our concrete is delivered by BC’s most reputable concrete suppliers directly to the site. The quality of the concrete mainly affects surface of the sidewalk after correct installation, but there are things we consider while we pour. In the cold, we protect our concrete from freezing for at least five days after placement with polyethylene sheeting. During the summer, we wet-cure to concrete to boost its strength while developing, as concrete dries much more quickly in the heat.
