Residential Retaining Wall Installation in Brookswood, Langley

Project Details
Project Summary:
Creating Stable Outdoor Spaces Through Thoughtful Retaining Wall Construction

This Brookswood, Langley project involved more than simply replacing an aging landscape feature. The existing wooden retaining walls had reached the end of their service life and no longer complemented the property’s grading improvements or long-term drainage strategy.
As part of a larger property transformation, VALROC Development Ltd. designed and constructed new concrete block retaining walls that improved the appearance of the property while helping manage grade changes and integrate with the surrounding landscape improvements.
Looking Beyond The Wall
Many retaining walls are built to solve a single problem, but they often become part of a much larger property system. Access routes, drainage patterns, driveways, sidewalks, and landscape elevations can all influence how a retaining wall performs over time.
During planning, we considered how the new retaining walls would work alongside the property’s upgraded drainage infrastructure and new asphalt driveway, creating a solution that functioned as a complete outdoor environment rather than a collection of individual projects.

Building For Long-Term Performance
The retaining walls were carefully constructed using quality concrete block materials designed for durability and a clean architectural appearance.
The project included:
- Removal of failing retaining wall structures.
- Site preparation and grading.
- Installation of engineered retaining wall blocks.
- Cap installation for a finished appearance.
- Integration with surrounding landscaping and drainage improvements.
- Coordination with the property’s new asphalt driveway and grading plan.
Why did this retaining wall have a curved design?
One of the interesting aspects of this Brookswood project was that a straight retaining wall would have required significantly more disturbance to the existing landscape. The curved design allowed the wall to follow the natural layout of the property while preserving mature ornamental trees, established garden beds, and the overall character of the front entrance.

A Relationship Built Over Multiple Projects
One of the things that makes this Brookswood project unique is that it wasn’t our first opportunity to work on the property. Over the years, the homeowners have trusted VALROC Development Ltd. with a variety of construction projects, allowing us to better understand the property and its long-term needs.
The retaining wall, trench drain, underground aggregate rock pit, and asphalt driveway weren’t isolated upgrades. They became another chapter in an ongoing effort to improve and protect the property while respecting the character that had already been established.
Tony’s public Google review offers his perspective on the experience and the completed project.
More Than Improved Appearance
One of the most rewarding parts of this Brookswood project was seeing how the retaining walls helped tie the entire front property together. Rather than feeling like a collection of separate features, the driveway, drainage improvements, landscape beds, and front entrance now work as a unified outdoor space.
The curved retaining wall creates a natural transition through the property while opening up sightlines and providing definition to the existing gardens. Mature trees and ornamental plantings remain the focal point, with the retaining wall acting as a complementary feature rather than competing for attention.

Why Did This Area Need More Than Just Regrading?
At first, improving the slope of the property looked like a straightforward solution. As excavation progressed, it became clear that water was arriving from several directions and simply changing the grade wouldn’t solve the larger problem.
Roof drainage, surface runoff, the driveway, and existing landscape elevations all had to work together. Catch basins were installed to collect surface water, trench drains managed runoff in key areas, perimeter drainage and downspout connections helped move water away from the home, and the entire system was directed toward an underground rock pit designed to manage water below the surface. The retaining wall became part of that larger drainage strategy as well. Hidden behind the finished block wall is a substantial drainage cavity filled with 3/4-inch clear stone that helps relieve water pressure while protecting both the wall and the surrounding landscape.
Tony touched on this in his review of the project. What began as individual construction tasks ultimately became a coordinated solution involving engineered drainage, retaining walls, grading improvements, and a new asphalt driveway. Addressing these systems together helped create a finished property that functions as a whole rather than a collection of separate improvements.

For the homeowners, the improvement wasn’t simply a new retaining wall. It was an opportunity to create a more welcoming entrance to their home while supporting the larger property improvements completed throughout the project.
The completed project delivered:
- Create a more inviting and open front entrance.
- Frame and highlight existing landscape features.
- Connect the retaining wall with the new asphalt driveway.
- Blend drainage improvements into the overall landscape.
- Improve the flow and organization of the outdoor space.
- Add lasting value to the property’s overall appearance and function.

Building Around What Was Already There
One of the unique aspects of this Brookswood retaining wall project wasn’t simply constructing a new wall, it was working around a landscape that had developed over many years. Mature Japanese maples, established rhododendrons, privacy hedges, and ornamental gardens had become part of the property’s character and weren’t something the homeowners wanted to lose.
Planning the project meant considering more than excavation and block placement. Existing grades, sensitive root systems, access for equipment, and the long-term health of the surrounding landscape all influenced how the retaining wall was built.
Behind the finished wall, a substantial drainage cavity filled with 3/4-inch clear stone was incorporated to help manage water movement through the property while reducing pressure against the retaining wall itself. Much of this work will never be seen, but it plays an important role in protecting both the structure and the surrounding landscape over the long term.
Today, the retaining wall provides a clean transition through the property and opens up the front entrance, while preserving many of the mature landscape features that were already established. Looking at the finished project, it’s difficult to appreciate how much planning went into fitting the new construction around what was already there, and that’s exactly the way the homeowners wanted it.

This Retaining Wall Was Just One Piece Of The Project
While this page focuses on the retaining wall installation, it formed part of a larger Brookswood, Langley property improvement that addressed drainage, grading, and access throughout the site. By coordinating multiple phases of construction, the homeowners were able to improve both the functionality and appearance of their property through a single, carefully planned project.
